4 Days desert tour description :

The limits of the northern Moroccan south of the region are well defined (the Great South begins on the southern slopes of the Atlas), it is not the same of its southern limits, which will get lost in the sands of the desert.

As in any desert area, water is not always beneficial: it falls only 100 mm per year on average, but in the form of violent and devastating rains that wash away everything in their path.
The presence of man in this environment can therefore only be seasonal.

The nomads with their meager herds live in temporary villages where, when a house disappears, defeated by the weather, they do not rebuild it, but go to build another one elsewhere... Everything becomes fleeting in the Moroccan South.

The discovery tour of the great Moroccan south in 4 days in 4x4 will make you travel in private tour in the most beautiful sites of Morocco. Visit a real kasbah, explore Merzouga and contemplate breathtaking landscapes.

4 Days desert tour program :

Day 1 : Marrakech - Ouarzazate et Zagora

  • The discovery tour of southern Morocco in 4 days by 4x4 starts at 8:00 am. We will pick you up at your hotel to start this private tour.
  • Crossing of the High Atlas by the pass of Tizi n'Tichka (at 2260 m of altitude).
  • Visit of Agdez, a village with lunar landscapes located at the source of the Drââ valley. From the village of Agdz, the valley really begins to unfold its natural riches. Along the wadi, a very dense and almost uninterrupted palm grove casts its beneficial shadow on tiny fields scattered among the trees and separated by a tangle of small adobe walls.
  • Crossing the pre-Saharan routes to the small town of Zagora, 171 km southeast of Ouarzazate. Like Ouarzazate, Zagora is a recent town, built under the French protectorate as an administrative center. The oasis, however, has always been inhabited. At the top of the Zagora jebel, the ruins of an Almoravid fortress remain. And it is from here that the Saadians launched out to the conquest of the Under. The city does not present in itself much interest, except the famous panel indicating "Timbuktu in 52 days" (on camelback, of course!), but its surroundings are very rich and offer magnificent landscapes.
  • Dinner and night in bivouac near Zagora.

Day 2 : Zagora - Erfoud et Merzouga

  • We will begin our 2nd day of the southern Moroccan circuit by the visit of the palm grove of Mellal, Tazzarine and Alnif.
Discovery of N'Kob and its stony region.
  • Lunch and visit of the city of Erfoud. About 75 km south of Er-Rachidia. In this immense oasis, fed by the Ziz wadi and the Rehris wadi, the French built the administrative and military city of Erfoud, intended to supervise the tribes of Tafilalet, the last of Morocco to submit to the protectorate. The town itself is not of great interest, but it is an ideal starting point for excursions in the region.
  • Arrive in Merzouga, drop off your main luggage at your camp and get ready for a once-in-a-lifetime experience with The most typical means of transportation in the world? The Camel, of course! Get ready for a hell of a sunset, this ride takes about an hour, crosses the vast expanse of sand and returns to your private camp for an overnight bivouac with dinner and folkloric entertainment.
  • In case of late arrival the ride will be postponed to the next day to admire the sunrise in the dunes of Merzouga.

Day 3 : Erfoud - Todra et Boumen Dades

  • Visit of the Todra gorges, natural site composed of high rocky cliffs. In order to arrive on the site of the Todra Gorge, we take the road 6902 which is paved only on 14 km, which is enough to see the spectacular narrowing of the bed of the wadi. It follows the right bank of the wadi and, after 2 km, dominates a beautiful palm grove that borders the bed of Todra. It follows the narrow valley until the level of the hotel El Mansour, where you can park your vehicle and continue on foot for 100 m further, to cross the wadi by fording. Be careful! the water level can be high at the time of the floods. It is the narrowest passage of these gorges which are hardly more than 30 m wide and whose vertical cliffs reach 250 m height! This impressive landscape has been used as a backdrop for many film productions. It is possible to hike there; the sheer rocks are the favorite terrain of climbing enthusiasts.
  • Lunch and visit to the Dades Gorge. The gorges of Dadés sink into the High Atlas. On both sides of the wadi, the site seems literally ravaged, the landslides of earth and red rocks, sometimes purplish, create a grandiose setting that the many ruined kasbas, perched on rocky peaks, make even more spectacular.
You will also see villages nestled in a green hollow. Pass in front of an old kasbah of the Pasha Glaoui, at km 6, which it is possible to visit. At km 15, discover the cliff of Tamlat famous for its monkey fingers. The tarred road stops at the entrance of the gorges at km 29 and gives way to a track. To go up to the point of view, from where one discovers the gorges, requires less than one hour since Ait Oudinar.
    Free time before dinner.
  • Dinner and night in a comfortable hotel located in Boumen Dadés.

Day 4 : Boumen Dadés - Ouarzazate et Marrakech

  • Crossing of the Dades valley, located on the road of the "Thousand Kasbahs". Discovery of fortified villages built in clay, kasbahs and ksours.
This vast river plain extends to the tabular geological formations that close the horizon; the snowy peaks of the High Atlas on the left and the bare peaks of the Anti-Atlas on the right are visible beyond. It is in this grandiose and desert site that some sequences of Lawrence of Arabia were shot.
  • Lunch in the city of Ouarzazate, and visit of the city. Ouarzazate was built from scratch by the French in 1928 to house garrisons. Ouarzazate stretches in the middle of a desert plateau at the crossroads of the Draa and Dades valleys, Ouarzazate is also known as the Hollywood of Morocco.
  • Then visit the kasbah Taourirt: which dominates the city and the plain, amazes by its majesty and its massive appearance. The visitors have difficulty to give it an age: it seems at the same time very old, by its architecture, and recent undoubtedly because of the renovations. It is possible to visit a part of this fortified village which was used as residence to the pasha glaoui.
And during the route of our southern Moroccan circuit we will also stop to discover the famous kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, classified in the world heritage of the Unesco.
Situated on the edge of a wadi, clinging to the side of an arid hill, rises the fortified city. Made up of high houses flanked by square towers, it is surrounded by ramparts pierced by a monumental gate that is now walled. It has been partly restored by Unesco and thanks to the money from the films shot here. At the foot of the walls of the enclosure are spread crops. The ksar is still inhabited by some families.
  • Passage through the Tizin-Tichka pass to admire the landscape of the highest pass in North Africa.
  • Return to Marrakech in the late afternoon.

It was an unforgettable experience! On the way, we enter the most traditional Moroccan villages and the arrival in the desert is spectacular... A place to disconnect, enjoy the silence and feel the sand of the dunes. Our guide Hassan was the best! He made every place a special activity, he tried at all times to do his best for us and told us everything with the greatest affection and feeling for the Berber people. We would definitely do it again with him!
