7 days desert tour in south morocco description   :

The south Morocco circuit 4x4, during 7 days and 6 nights, will plunge you into the rich cultures and landscapes of southern Morocco.

Ouarzazate, Zagora, Merzouga... How not to dream, at the evocation of these names, to a distant Tartar desert, to these garrisons whose soldiers have their eyes riveted on a hostile desert, on threatening peaks? How not to shiver in front of the ksours and the ochre kasbahs which raise their walls towards the sky? Dream and shiver, the Moroccan South welcomes you.

Thanks to this tour in the south of Morocco you will explore the magic, the immensity and the cultural and architectural richness of Morocco, and especially the south of Morocco. You will stay in traditional accommodation and explore villages off the beaten track. You will enjoy the best Berber tajines, you will visit the great kasbah Ait Ben haddou, and you will travel the great Sahara on camelback like a Tuareg.

7 days desert tour in south morocco program :

Day 1 : Marrakech - Ouarzazate

  • In the direction of the city of Ouarzazate we will go up to the pass of Tizi N Tichka located at 2260 m of altitude, it is considered as the highest pass in North Africa.
  • Crossing of the Ounila valley following the Telouet track.
  • Visit of the kasbah of Telouet, which was the residence of the last lord of the Moroccan south who is the Pacha El Glaoui.
  • The scenic drive will take you past ancient kasbah ruins, former colonial military outposts, austere mountains and valleys of palm trees and irrigated fields, one of the most beautiful kasbahs to visit on this route is the famous kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou. Centuries ago, it was an important stop for caravans carrying salt across the Sahara. Today, its large kasbah, a beautiful example of clay architecture, has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou has also been used as a film location for several international films, such as: Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, Tea in the Sahara, Game of Thrones, Asterix and Obelix...
  • Dinner and night in a hotel near the Kasbah Ait ben Haddou.

Day 2 : Ouarzazate - Tineghir

  • Free time to enjoy the Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou.
  • Visit of the Kasbah of Taourirte.
  • Drive on the famous road of the Thousand Kasbahs to the Palmeraie of Skoura. Around Skoura you will discover luxuriant palm grove, you will notice the two very beautiful kasbas of Amerhidil and Dar Ait Sidi el-Mati, at the entrance of the city on the left. Note their pure lines, with sober decoration and well drawn edges. We will also cross an almost desert-like expanse before reaching an imposing group of ruined kasbas, of which we can still see some richly decorated walls throwing their last challenge to time and erosion.
  • Crossing of the valley of the roses and visit of the gorges of Dadès.
The entrance to the Dades Gorge is guarded by the administrative center Boulmane du Dades. The road is tarred only on about twenty kilo meters. After a series of ksours and kasbahs emerge steep gorges and dizzying canyons that you will love.
Discover a bright green sheet that may seem so out of place that you'll think you're dreaming! This valley is quite impressive, with all its palm trees and earthen villages
  • After visiting the Dades Gorge we continue our journey to Tineghir, where you will have dinner and spend the night in a typical inn.

Day 3 : Tineghir - Merzouga

  • We will start our day by exploring the Todra Gorge.
You will pass Berber villages, meet local Berbers along the way and perhaps have the opportunity to share a cup of mint tea. The surrounding mountains and the famous valley of roses in the distance make for a sensational setting. To fully enjoy the walk, make sure you have sturdy walking shoes or sneakers, sunglasses, sunscreen and plenty of water.
  • Lunch in Erfoud and discovery of the city, where there is a vast palm grove. The road to Erfoud is dotted with many ksour, all inhabited.
  • Travel towards Merzouga.
Merzouga is a small town on the edge of the Erg Chebbi in the Sahara Desert in southern Morocco. This town is only 20 km from the border with Algeria, where the traditional paved road ends and the incredible dunes of the southern Moroccan desert begin. The desert of Merzouga is one of the most common points for bivouacs and camel rides in Morocco. The 7 day southern Moroccan desert tour is one of the most coveted desert tours in Morocco.
Merzouga is also the great attraction of Tafilalet with the grandiose scenery of the dunes of Erg Chebbi, the largest of all southern Morocco (over 40 km long and up to 150 m high). In winter, the dunes shelter the Dayet Srji lake which attracts hundreds of pink flamingos.
  • Camel ride in the big dunes of Erg Chebi at sunset.
  • Dinner, folkloric animation and night at the bivouac in Merzouga.

Day 4 : Merzouga - Agdz

  • Travel to the Berber villages of Alnif and Tazarin.
  • Lunch in the region of Nkob, then visit the great oasis of the palm grove and the valley of Drââ which will allow you to contemplate landscapes of an incredible aridity: as far as the eye can see extends a chaos of broken rocks, sometimes clear and as discolored by the sun, sometimes seeming blackened by the intense heat.
  • Arrive in Agdz at the end of the day which is a small mountain town located in the High Atlas, along the banks of the Draa River. A classic caravan oasis with a beautiful palm grove, the town offers a magnificent view of the Jebel Kissane mountains.
  • Dinner and overnight in Agdz in a typical guesthouse.

Day 5 : Agdz - Zagora - Mhamid

  • Typical visit in the dunes of Erg Lihoudi in Mhamid by camel.
  • Dinner and night in a bivouac, under a nomad tent or under the stars in the dunes of Mhamid.

A huge thank you to Faysal and Houcine who perfectly understood our desire to discover the Moroccan south with our family and especially our teenagers!

Everything was perfect, in the circuit, with splendid landscapes, the choice of the accommodations, authentic, comfortable and with human size, with very sympathetic hosts; the local guides, professionals and with the listening of our questions.

And a very big thank you to our driver-guides, for their kindness, their listening, their availability .....

We return enchanted with the reflection of one of our teenagers: "We already miss everything from there"!
